BIRDEM (Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders of Bangladesh), a multisectoral health care center, institute of education and research in Shahbagh in Dhaka. This central institution of the Association of Diabetics of Bangladesh (DAB) was established in 1980 on a government plot and was financed by the government, and is located in three large multi-story buildings. The hospital, located in a 15-story building, now has 542 beds, of which 80 are designed for poor diabetic patients without charge. On average, about three thousand patients attend and checks are performed every day. It is one of the largest health complexes in Bangladesh and offers almost all types of clinical and diagnostic facilities. The hospital maintains almost all branches of clinical medical science with trained personnel and improved devices. Inpatient departments have adopted the characteristics of almost a general hospital, although diabetic patients and other endocrine patients always have priority. BIRDEM maintains an independent research department with full-time staff. The research activities are carried out in collaboration with several national and international research organizations.
The BIRDEM clinical services provide comprehensive and free diabetic care to all registered diabetic patients. The fund raised by the system of ‘Cross-financing’, that is, through medical care and the diagnostic service to other patients, is spent on the provision of free medical services for diabetic patients. Patients have the right to obtain medical supervision, consultations, diabetic education (which includes basic knowledge about general health), nutrition counseling, social support and rehabilitation, if necessary. Insulin, oral hypoglycemic agents and medications are provided free of charge or at a subsidized cost.
