How Many City Corporations In Bangladesh?

Bangladesh is a populous country with an area of 148,460 km². Bangladesh is divided into 8 divisions and the divisions are divided into 64 districts. There are 42 cities in Bangladesh and among these cities, 12 cities are governed by “City Corporations”.

So, there are 12 City Corporations in Bangladesh. The city corporations of Bangladesh are Barishal City Corporation (BCC), Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), Cumilla City Corporation (COCC), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Gazipur City Corporation (GCC), Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), Khulna City Corporation (KCC), Mymensingh City Corporation (MCC), Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), Rangpur City Corporation (RCC), and Sylhet City Corporation (SCC).

Barishal City Corporation (BCC)

This city corporation administers and does development and maintenance work in the city of Barisal. The total area of Barishal City Corporation is over 58 square kilometers. More than five million people live as permanent residents in this city corporation. Barishal City Corporation obtained the City Corporation status by a ministry of local government declaration on 25 July 2002. There are thirty wards in Barishal City Corporation. There is one elected mayor, 30 councilors, 9 woman councilors who are administrating this City Corporation. Services provided by Barishal City Corporation are – 

• Water purification and supply
• Sewage treatment and disposal
• Garbage disposal and street cleanliness
• Solid waste management
• Building and maintenance of roads and streets
• Street lighting
• Maintenance of parks and open spaces
• Cemeteries and Crematoriums
• Registering of births and deaths

The Cumilla city corporation covers an area of over 53.84 square kilometers in the Cumilla district. The total permanent residents of this City Corporation are more than five million. After the independence of Bangladesh, it was known as Comilla Municipality. It obtained the City Corporation status by a ministry of local government declaration on 10 July 2011. This City Corporation is ruled by one elected mayor, 27 councilors, and 9 woman councilors.

Dhaka North City Corporation consists of 54 northern wards of Dhaka. Annisul Huq was the first mayor of this City Corporation. This City Corporation was established on 29 November 2011. Before that, it was governed by the former Dhaka City Corporation. The Thanas of Dhaka North City Corporation are Turag, West Uttara west, East Uttara, Uttarkhan, Dakkhinkhan, Bimanbandar, Khilkhet, Vatara, Badda, Rampura, Hatirjheel, Shilpanchal, Tejgaon, Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, Mohammadpur, Adabor, Darussalam, Mirpur, Pallabi, Rupnagar, Shahali, Kafrul, Bhashantek, Cantonment, Banani and Gulshan.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC)

Dhaka South City Corporation is one of the two municipal corporations in Dhaka District and it was established on 29 November 2011 by the Local Government (City Corporation) Amendment Bill passed in the Parliament of Bangladesh. This City Corporation consists of 75 wards. The Thanas of Dhaka South City Corporation are Paltan, Motijheel, Sabujbag, Khilgon, Mugda, Shahjahanpur, Shampur, Jatrabari, Demra, Kadamtali, Gandaria, Wari, Ramna, Shahbag, Dhanmondi New market, Hazaribag, Kalabgan, Kotwali, Sutrapur, Lalbag, Bangshal, Chwakbazar, Kamrangirchar.

Mymensingh City Corporation (MCC)

Mymensingh City Corporation is located about 120 kilometers north of Bangladesh’s capital city Dhaka. This is the newest and the 12^th City Corporation of Bangladesh. It was established on 2 April 2018 at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee on Administrative Reforms (NICAR). This city Corporation has an area of 91.315 square kilometers and its population is about 471,858. The incumbent mayor of this City Corporation is the Municipality Mayor Ekramul Haque Titu. There is no Mayor election has been held since it turned into a City Corporation.

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC)

Rajshahi City Corporation is another major divisional city corporation of Bangladesh. This City Corporation consists of 30 wards. This City Corporation is ruled by a Mayor, 30 Ward councilors, and 10 women councilors.
