In Bangladesh, a medical school is commonly known as a medical college. A Bangladeshi medical college typically teaches medicine and awards professional medical degrees for physicians and surgeons.
Medical colleges in Bangladesh start enrolling students at the undergraduate level. The Bangladesh Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) administers these colleges. These colleges are also affiliated with a university on the individual region.
All the medical colleges in Bangladesh offer the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The Doctor of Medicine (MD), or Master of Surgery (MS) is also offered as a postgraduate research degree in certain medical colleges. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University is the only university in the country to offer postgraduate degrees (MD, PhD, MDS, Diploma and FCPS courses.
As of 2016, there are 89 recognized medical colleges in Bangladesh. Of them, 21 are public and 68 are private medical colleges. Additionally, there are six medical colleges that are operated by the Bangladesh Armed Forces and are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense.
This list of medical colleges is subject to change as failure to meet certain criteria set by administrative and regulatory bodies could result in losing one’s college’s license to offer education. So, make sure you double-check the validity of recognition of any Medical & Dental college listed below before enrolling.
