n the building construction industry brick is the main material for construction. A statistic shows every year about 17.2 billion burnt clay bricks are produced all over Bangladesh. Brick has a standard size and in Bangladesh, the standard size is specified by Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI). The standard size of brick is 10x5x3 inches. However, most of the brick kilns in Bangladesh follow the brick size of 9.5×4.5×2.8 inches.    

Usually, brick is made of burnt clay. The brick composition includes clay, sand, lime, and bearing soil or other concrete materials. Then the mixture is given the standard size and shape and it is fried into the manufacturing process. The size of the brick is very important for construction because bricks are used in various constructions and other ways. Therefore; according to the construction requirement, bricks are required in different sizes, shapes, and formations.

Types Of Bricks Based On Dimension

There are various types of bricks available depending on the dimension. They are:

Modular Brick: In modular brick, mortar thickness is added with the brick dimensions. The dimension of Modular brick in mm 194 x 92 x 57 (​7 5⁄8 × ​3 5⁄8 × ​2 1⁄4 inches).

1. Modular Economo: The dimension of this brick is 194 x 92 x 92 mm 

2. Engineering Brick: In cases where specific strength, porosity, resistance to acid or gas is required, engineering brick provided a good solution. The dimension of this brick is 194 x 92 x 71 mm 

3. Jumbo Modular: The dimension of this brick is 194 x 92 x 70 mm

4. Jumbo Standard: The dimension of this brick is mm 203 x 92 x 70 mm

5. Jumbo Standard (PLT 3): The dimension of this brick is mm 203 x 92 x 67 mm

6. Slim Jumbo Modular: The dimension of this brick is mm 194 x 76 x 70 mm

7. King: The dimension of this brick is mm 244 x 76 x 67 mm

8. Queen: The dimension of this brick is mm 244 x 79 x 70 mm

9. Closure: The dimension of this brick is mm 194 x 92 x 92 mm

10. Norwegian: The dimension of this brick is mm 295 x 92 x 71 mm

11. Roman: The dimension of this brick is mm 295 x 92 x 41 mm

12. Norman: The dimension of this brick is mm 295 x 92 x 57 mm

13. Slim Jumbo Norman: The dimension of this brick is mm 295 x 79 x 70 mm

14. Utility: The dimension of this brick is mm 295 x 92 x 92 mm

15. Double Utility: The dimension of this brick is mm 295 x 92 x 194 mm

16. Monarch: The dimension of this brick is mm 397 x 92 x 92 mm

17. Double Monarch: The dimension of this brick is mm 397 x 92 x 194 mm

Types Of Bricks Based On Application

There are various types of bricks available based on the application. They are:

1. Building Brick: Structural and non-structural brick where appearance is not important

2. Ceramic Glazed Brick: Standard glazed brick

3. Chemical-Resistant Brick: Brick exposed to chemicals and acids

4. Facing Brick: Structural and non-structural brick where appearance is important

5. Firebox Brick: Residential fireplaces

6. Heavy Vehicular Paving Brick: Standard or heavy vehicular traffic

7. Hollow Brick: A building or facing brick used with anchors (e.g. brick veneer) or reinforcing

8. Industrial Floor Brick: Surfacing industrial floors

9. Thin Veneer Brick: Directly applied veneers

10. Pedestrian Paving Brick: Paving for pedestrian or very light vehicular traffic

11. Sewer and Manhole Brick: Structures for the conveyance of sewage, stormwater, and industrial waste

12. Single Fired Glazed Brick: Glazed brick where the glaze is fused during the firing of the main brick body
