How to Apply for Birth Registration for a Child in Bangladesh

Birth registration is the registration of a person’s name, gender, date of birth and place, parents’ names, their nationality and permanent address under the Birth and Death Registration Act, 2004 (Act 29), and the entry or registration on the computer by the Registrar Issuance of Birth Certificate.

According to article 7 of the United Nations Convention on the Right to Child, “Every child has a right to a name, birth registration, and nationality. As far as possible, every child has the right to know and be cared for by his / her parents.

The Process of Birth Registration Application in Bangladesh

The process of birth registration is very simple. You have to fill up the birth registration application form and have to apply to the register with the following documents or certification. You can also apply for birth registration online by visiting the br.lgd.gov.bd web site. Once you have submitted proper documents and form the registrar will be able to register the birth. Documents required:

Application is made within five years of the birth of the person registered –

  • Verified copy of EPI card, or
  • Certificate of data collection, or
  • A copy of the relevant medical institution’s certificate, or
  • A birth certificate obtained from the said institution, or
  • Certification of any NGO worker specified by the registrar as the data collector

Application is made five years after the birth of the person registered – 

  • Certification of MBBS Doctor for proof of age and concerned ward counselor/member for proof of place of birth or permanent residence, or
  • Certification of Principal or Head Teacher or concerned nominee of the concerned educational institute as a collector of information for proof of age and place of birth, or
  • EPI card or passport or secondary school certificate for proof of age and place of birth, or
  • A birth certificate from a medical institution, or
  • Certification of any NGO worker specified by the registrar as the data collector

What is the Rate of Birth Registration Fee?

You don’t have to pay any registration fee if you register the birth of a child within 45 days. If you want to register the birth of a child after 45 days of the birth and within 5 years, you have to pay 25 taka and if you want to register the birth of a child after 5 years, you have to pay 50 take. You can also modify the birth date and other information from the birth certificate. The application fee for modification of date of birth is 100 taka and the application fee for modification of other applications is 50 taka.
